Ephesians 5:15–21
We live in a world where good and evil coexist, and increasingly, the distinction between the two is blurred. What God calls evil is often celebrated as good, while what God calls good is dismissed as foolish or outdated. Dishonesty is excused, immorality is entertained, and kindness, forgiveness, and sacrificial love are sometimes mistaken for weakness.
It is into such a world that Paul speaks: “See then that you walk circumspectly, not as fools but as wise” (Ephesians 5:15, NKJV).
The word circumspectly means carefully, accurately, or with deliberate attention. Paul is telling us to pay attention to how we live. Why? Because the days are evil. We cannot afford to drift through life, allowing the world around us to determine what we believe, what we value, or how we behave.
But walking wisely involves more than recognizing what is wrong with the world. It requires recognizing what is right in God’s eyes! Paul calls us to understand the Lord’s will, to be filled with the Spirit, and to live lives characterized by worship, gratitude, and humility.
We cannot always control our circumstances, and we certainly cannot control the culture around us. But through Christ and by the power of His Spirit, we can live differently.
We may not be able to change the character of the days in which we live, but we can determine the character of the lives we live in them.
So, don’t simply go along with the crowd. Don’t allow what is common to become what is acceptable. Pay attention to your walk. Make the most of your opportunities. Seek to understand what pleases the Lord, and depend upon the Holy Spirit to empower you to live accordingly.
The world doesn’t need Christians who have learned to fit in. It needs Christians who have learned to walk wisely!
