“A prophet is not without honor except in his own country, among his own relatives, and in his own house” (Mk. 6:4).

A bottle of water at the grocery store costs $1. At the quick stop, it may cost $2. At an air show, it might cost $4. On a flight to New York, it could cost $5. It is the same bottle. The same water. Nothing about the contents has changed. The water didn’t change; the location did.

Sometimes we make the mistake of measuring our worth by the way people around us value us. We assume that if we are overlooked, underappreciated, ignored, or taken for granted, there must be something lacking in us. But perhaps the problem is not your value. Perhaps you need to check your location.

There are environments where what God has placed in you will be overlooked. There are people who may never recognize your gifts, appreciate your character, or understand what you have to offer. Their inability to recognize your value does not determine your worth.

Joseph was still Joseph in the pit. He was still Joseph in Potiphar’s house. He was still Joseph in prison. And he was still Joseph when he stood beside Pharaoh. His circumstances changed dramatically, but what God had placed within him remained. David was still God’s anointed when Saul treated him like an enemy. His treatment did not change his calling. Jesus was still the Son of God when His own hometown failed to recognize who He truly was. Their inability to see His worth did not diminish it.

Your value is not established by the room you are in or by the people who recognize it. Your worth is established by the God who created you, redeemed you, called you, and gave you purpose.

So the next time you begin questioning your worth because someone else seems unable to see it, do not immediately question what is inside you. Check your location. Maybe you are not worthless. Maybe you are simply standing in a place that does not recognize your worth.

Changing locations does not make you valuable. It may simply put you in a place where the value God has already placed in you can be recognized and used.
