The price of gas changes with every fill-up. Our culture seems to invent a new crazy idea every other week. My favorite Mexican restaurant recently shut down. And to make matters worse, the man looking back at me in the mirror is getting older. Life just ain’t what it used to be.

News flash: Jesus Christ is “the same yesterday, today, and forever” (Hebrews 13:8).

Everything around us is changing. Prices change. Culture changes. Communities change. People change. Our bodies certainly change. Things we thought would always be there suddenly disappear, and sometimes we find ourselves longing for the way things used to be. For stability.

Perhaps all this change is exposing something in us. Maybe we had become too comfortable with familiar circumstances. Maybe without realizing it, we began trusting the predictable rather than trusting the Provider.

God has not changed. His character has not changed. His promises have not changed. His faithfulness has not weakened. His grace has not diminished. His power has not faded. The same God who carried us yesterday is still God today, and He will still be God tomorrow.

What if the instability around us is revealing the instability in us?  Perhaps it’s revealing where our security has been. Maybe it’s revealing the weakness of what we’ve relied on. There is the real possibility that it’s calling us to refocus our trust on our unchanging God.  (See Psalm 20:7.)

Sometimes God allows the familiar things around us to become uncertain so that we rediscover the certainty of the One who never changes.
