“You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies” (Psalm 23:5).
There is something remarkable about the picture David gives us in Psalm 23. He does not say that God removes his enemies or relocates him somewhere beyond their reach. Instead, he says that God prepares a table in their presence. That means two realities can exist at the same time: the enemies are real, and the table is ready.
And right between those two realities is one little word: “me.” That is often where we live—between pressure and provision, conflict and communion, fear and fellowship. On one side are the things demanding our attention: problems we cannot immediately solve, circumstances we cannot control, memories that trouble us, and fears about what might happen next. Everything in us wants to get up and fight—to defend ourselves, fix everything, answer every voice, and control every outcome.
But on the other side is a table. The Shepherd has prepared something for us in the very place where the enemy expected us to be overwhelmed. There is grace for what we face, strength for what we carry, peace for what we cannot control, and fellowship with the One who has promised never to leave us.
So the question becomes: Where will we focus—on the enemies or on the table? Sometimes the greatest act of faith is not standing up to fight but sitting down to feast. It is refusing to allow what is against us to distract us from what God has prepared for us. You don’t win by fighting at the level of your enemies. You are sustained by feasting at the table of your Shepherd.
That is why we continually need to come back to the table—back to His presence, back to His Word, back to prayer, back to the finished work of Christ, and back to the reminder that our lives are sustained not by our ability to control everything around us, but by the provision of the Shepherd who cares for us.
The enemies may still be present when you get there. The circumstances may not have changed. The pressure may still be real. But so is the table. Today, instead of allowing what surrounds you to consume your attention, turn your eyes toward what God has prepared for you.
