When you consider your house, your land, your vehicle, your furniture, your investments, your savings, and every other possession you own—what is your net worth? Now do that for every person on earth. According to recent estimates, the combined net worth of the entire world is measured in the hundreds of trillions of dollars. Yet Jesus asks a question that instantly puts all of it into perspective: “For what will it profit a man if he gains the whole world, and loses his own soul? Or what will a man give in exchange for his soul?” (Matthew 16:26)

The point is staggering. If one person somehow accumulated every dollar, every acre of land, every building, every precious metal, every work of art, and every earthly pleasure this world has to offer, it still would not be enough to buy back a single soul. Wealth can purchase comfort, but it cannot purchase forgiveness. It can extend convenience, but it cannot extend life. It can buy medicine, but not immortality. It can add luxury to life, but it cannot add one day to your life—much less purchase eternal life.

Jesus is reminding us that we often assign enormous value to the things that are temporary while neglecting the one thing that is eternal. The soul is worth more than the wealth of the whole world because the soul will outlive the world itself. Houses will crumble. Markets will fluctuate. Nations will rise and fall. The treasures of earth will eventually pass away, but your soul will live forever.

But the greatest truth is not simply that your soul is priceless—it is that God considered it worth redeeming.

Jesus asked, “What will a man give in exchange for his soul?” The implied answer is here is nothing a man possesses that can purchase his own redemption. No amount of money, no lifetime of good works, no earthly achievement, and no human effort can pay the debt of sin.

Yet what we could never purchase, God provided.

The Father gave His Son, and the Son gave His life. The cross declares the true value of the human soul. The price of our redemption was not silver or gold, but the precious blood of Jesus Christ. Heaven did not redeem us with earth’s riches; it redeemed us with God’s only begotten Son.

If God valued your soul enough to give His only begotten Son, then don’t trade it for things that will not last. Live for what is eternal. Treasure Christ above every earthly possession, for in Him you possess the one treasure that death can never take away. –PGR
